At Myers Chimney, your family’s safety is at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we’re making an important improvement to our WETT inspection services—one that goes above and beyond the current WETT requirements.

Why the Change?

In many homes, the biggest fire risks aren’t visible in your living space—they’re hidden in the attic.

One of the most common problems we see is the absence of an attic insulation shield. Without this critical safety component, insulation can end up directly against the chimney, creating a serious fire hazard.

While installers are required to include attic insulation shields, they are sometimes not installed —or compromised later when insulation companies add material without knowing the clearance requirements.

What’s New in Our Inspections?

From now on, during a Level 1 (Visual) WETT inspection, we will:

- Access attic hatches that are readily accessible (as long as they’re safe and not blocked).

- Check for conditions that could indicate missing or compromised attic insulation shields.

- Record our findings and any accessibility limitations directly in your WETT inspection report.

These steps are not currently required by WETT standards—but we believe it’s too important for your safety to overlook.

What “Readily Accessible” Means

We’ll inspect your attic if the hatch is:

- Within 10 ft of the floor,

 - Properly sized, and not painted, screwed, or nailed shut,

 - Free of insulation or personal belongings blocking access, and,

 - Safe for us to open.

Our view will be limited to what can be seen from the hatch, but even that glimpse often provides critical safety information.

Our Recommendation for Homeowners

Even with this added level of care, some parts of a chimney remain concealed. If you have any doubts at all about your chimney’s safety, we recommend hiring a qualified contractor to access and confirm that:

- An attic insulation shield is properly installed, and

 - All combustible materials are kept at least 2 inches away from the chimney.

At Myers Chimney, we don’t just meet the standard—we exceed it. Because when it comes to protecting your home and family, “good enough” isn’t good enough.
