A WETT Inspection should identify the Chimney Brand & Model!

I have come across a lot of WETT inspection reports that do not identify the chimney brand and model in the report. Below is an article I have written to educate WETT inspectors and their clients:

Does a WETT Inspection Need to Identify the Chimney Brand and Model?

When evaluating a wood-burning system, WETT inspectors often focus on the appliance, but the chimney system is just as critical.

A Useful Comparison: Wood Stoves vs. Chimney Systems

WETT inspectors are trained that a wood stove without a certification label must be treated as an uncertified appliance. The certification label provides tested clearance requirements. Without it, required clearance increases to 48 inches on all sides.

Many insurers may refuse coverage for an unlisted appliance.

CSA B365 (Installation Code) provides default requirements for unlabeled stoves.

However, chimney systems do not have any default clearances.

No “Default” clearances exist

CSA B365 requires all appliances and equipment to be installed according to the manufacturer's instructions. But unlike wood stoves, it provides no fallback clearances for factory-built chimneys. Requirements vary by manufacturer and model.

Why Identifying the Chimney Brand and Model Is Mandatory

An inspection report listing the chimney as “unknown” but concluding it is “compliant” is contradictory. WETT inspectors have no independent authority—only the competence to identify technical facts.

Compliance cannot be verified without identifying the chimney’s brand and model.

Definition of a WETT Inspection

A WETT Inspection™ evaluates a wood-burning appliance or system for compliance with codes, safety standards, and manufacturer instructions.

One cannot confirm compliance with unidentified instructions.

How Inspectors Should Approach This

1. Research every system.

2. Prioritize accuracy over convenience.

3. Demonstrate professionalism to clients.

With diligence and humility, an inspector can develop strong technical expertise.
